Inventors Spotlight: Nicole Orlando and The Laundry Lab

Inventing Out of Necessity

Nicole Orlando didn’t set out to become an inventor—she simply wanted to solve a real problem. Living in a New York City apartment without in-unit laundry, Nicole found herself frustrated by the weekly struggle of hauling bulky detergent bottles and supplies to her building’s shared laundry room. Carrying everything in ziplock bags and old takeout containers, she thought, “There has to be a better way.”

That moment sparked the idea that would become The Laundry Lab a modern, sleek, all-in-one system for transporting detergent, softener, scent beads, and more, designed especially for struggling laundry do-ers.

From Idea to Prototype

Nicole’s journey from idea to finished product took about a year and a half. She worked closely with a manufacturer who believed in her vision and didn’t rush the process. Together, they refined the prototype multiple times to ensure the final product wasn’t just functional, but something she was proud of.

“I always heard people say your product doesn’t have to be perfect to launch. While I understand the sentiment, it does need to be something you’re proud of, especially when customers are counting on you. I was careful not to rush the process” – Nicole Orlando

She took a hands-on approach, learning each step and staying involved in every detail—from the design to the functionality of the product.

Taking the Leap

Three months after launching, Nicole made a bold move—she signed up for her first trade show: The Inspired Home Show. Though nervous, she knew it was an important step to showcase her invention. That leap paid off: she met key people in the industry, received incredible product feedback, and even won a Good Housekeeping Award, something people take years to achieve.

That very award led to one of her favorite accomplishments! The Laundry Lab was featured on Good Morning America, a moment Nicole describes as surreal and unforgettable for only being in business for 8 months.

“I’ll never forget seeing my product on TV for the very first time, she says.

Growing a Brand with Purpose

Now, The Laundry Lab is more than just a product—it’s a growing brand. Nicole is expanding into new colors, designing additional laundry accessories, and catering to an overlooked customer: people who use laundromats.

She’s also seeing success in the college market, where students love the simplicity and design of her solution. As her product line grows, she remains rooted in solving everyday problems with real-world solutions.

Advice to Fellow Inventors

Nicole’s journey wasn’t without its challenges, but she attributes her success to staying curious and getting outside her comfort zone.

“You have to immerse yourself in your industry—go to events, talk to people, and keep learning. Get inspired”

She also emphasizes the importance of giving back. Nicole regularly helps other inventors by sharing resources, offering guidance, and demystifying the process as she navigates her own journey too.

What’s Next for The Laundry Lab?

Nicole is continuing to build her product line and community. Her mission remains clear: create modern, thoughtful tools that make everyday tasks easier and more enjoyable. With her eye on long-term impact and a heart for helping others, The Laundry Lab is just getting started.
