Inventor Success Story: Lexa Gandolfo and the PakkaTM Cargo Caddie

The United Inventors Association (UIA) is proud to spotlight Lexa Gandolfo, an independent inventor who transformed a common frustration into an innovative solution—PakkaTM Cargo Caddie. PakkaTM Cargo Caddie is a patented trunk organizer for SUVs and CUVs, solving the problem of messy, disorganized trunks by providing a convenient shelf above the trunk floor. It’s perfect for groceries, sports equipment, camping gear, tailgating essentials, and more. Lexa was able to license her invention in May 2023 to Curt, a leading manufacturer of towing products, cargo carriers, and bike racks. The product just launched Fall of 2024, and is available in stores and online including: Amazon, eTrailer.com, and Walmart.com.

The Lightbulb Moment

Lexa’s journey began with a practical need—organizing the chaotic trunk space of her SUV while managing her growing family. Nothing on the market met her need for a product that maximized the vertical space in her large SUV trunk. When no solution appeared, she decided to create one herself. As years passed and the need remained unmet, she finally took the leap and designed her own.

The Development Process

From the start, Lexa knew she wanted to license her product rather than manufacture it herself. She faced challenges as a first-time inventor, navigating through a sea of misinformation. By connecting with a local inventors’ organization, she was able to work with engineers and students at the University of Maryland to develop early prototypes. These initial versions, while imperfect, were invaluable for testing and refining her idea.

Eventually, Lexa partnered with Earmark Sourcing and Xomtery to create a polished, manufacturable prototype that showcased the PakkaTM Cargo Caddie’s full potential. “I learned how important it is to design with manufacturing in mind—it needs to be functional, easy to produce, and appealing to potential licensees,” she explained.

Overcoming Challenges

Lexa encountered the ups and downs familiar to every independent inventor. She emphasized the importance of building a supportive network, volunteering her time with organizations like the UIA, to learn from experienced mentors. “Surrounding myself with people who were honest about the challenges of inventing made all the difference. It gave me a sense of community and kept me focused,” she said.

A Standout Moment of Success

One of Lexa’s proudest moments came when the PakkaTM Cargo Caddie debuted at SEMA, the world’s largest automotive trade show. Seeing her product on display, packaged and ready for market, was a surreal experience. “Watching sales reps pitch my invention to buyers from across the globe was a moment I’ll never forget,” she reflected.

What Makes PakkaTM Cargo Caddie Innovative?

The PakkaTM Cargo Caddie stands out for its simplicity and versatility. It offers a universal fit for most SUVs and CUVs, installs in under 10 minutes without tools, and provides an elegant solution to trunk clutter. “It’s innovative because it addresses a real problem in a way that’s both functional and easy to use,” Lexa said.

Advice for Aspiring Inventors

Lexa’s journey taught her invaluable lessons:

  • Patent Strategically: Don’t rush into patenting without fully developing your concept.
  • Leverage Resources: University prototyping labs and free educational tools from organizations like the UIA can be game-changers.
  • Build Connections: Surround yourself with supportive, experienced individuals who can guide you through the process.
What’s Next?

Lexa is already working on her next invention—a pet product designed to make feeding schedules easier for families with kids. Her ability to identify everyday problems and turn them into practical solutions continues to drive her success.

The Takeaway

Lexa Gandolfo’s story is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of community. Through her journey, she not only brought the PakkaTM Cargo Caddie to life but also inspired other inventors to take the leap and bring their ideas to market.
