George Peters: Inventors Association of New England (IANE)
As an independent inventor over the last two decades, Mr. Peters has experienced many of the joys and disappointments developing ideas into new products. Mr. Peters has been a guest speaker at many events around the country. Addressing a wide variety of subjects; Product licensing, supply chain management, introducing a new product to buyers and marketing a disruptive product to name just a few. Mr. Peters has created safety and consumer’s products, taking them to market on the most difficult road, that of an independent inventor.

Most recently Mr. Peters and fellow inventor and KettlePizza co-founder Al Contarino were honored to represent Massachusetts as a Made in America product at the White House in June 2019. KettlePizza turns charcoal and gas grills into backyard pizza ovens. KettlePizza products have been sold to people in more than seventy countries. Raytheon, GE, Bristol-Myers Squib, and Fidelity Investments were some of the many companies to use Mr. Peters WHAT NOW??? Evacuation Training Aid. WHAT NOW??? replicates the appearance of a working fire that blocks primary exits during evacuation drills so building occupants could practice locating alternative escape routes.

A topic Mr. Peters likes to address during his presentations is the effect that becoming an inventor can have on a family. Quite often, becoming an inventor brings many new challenges that sometimes create a stressful period for a family.

Highlighting Mr. Peters career includes being a guest speaker in 2008 and 2010 at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Independent Inventor’s Conference “Spark of Genius” and as a four-time presenter at Babson College Entrepreneurship program.

UIA Education Series -Joe is a young entrepreneur and the inventor of smartwatch screen-rotation known as Wristruments. You can learn more about Wristruments and support their campaign here; https://www.wristruments.com/

Joe grew up in Londonderry, New Hampshire. He was diagnosed with ADHD at an early age, which led to an untraditional education experience for him. After graduating from high school in 2010, Joe attended 3 different universities in New Hampshire. He failed out a few credits short of his Psychology & Behavioral Neuroscience degree. Joe never had the grades to get into business school, so went to school for psychology, but was always more interested in Entrepreneurship.

Shortly after starting college, he discovered free online classes after taking a Technology Entrepreneurship course offered by Stanford. In this course, he worked on an e-learning start-up called SkillOut with team members around the world. He found this type of involved learning to be more beneficial than the psychology courses he was taking in school.
“I was getting real experience from universities with better names, working with driven students on problems I wanted to solve, and it was all free.”

Joe began taking more courses online from Stanford, MIT, Khan Academy, Udemy, and others. While attending college, he worked various part-time jobs such as a merchandiser, car salesman, bartender, and barista to name a few.

In 2015, Joe was kicked out of the University of New Hampshire for missing a final exam that was scheduled on the same day as the school’s Business to Market competition. Joe’s team Chatter (a geo-location based social messaging app) won first place in the high-tech track, and second overall. This technicality seemed to be a recurring theme in Joe’s education experience, and it was at this moment he realized something really needed to change in higher education.

Within 4 years of failing out of UNH, he was one of 3 students invited back for their “Young Professionals Alumni” panel.

After leaving school for good Joe began using skills developed through his own start-ups to consult other businesses. He worked with a variety of clients ranging from mom-and-pop shops to publicly traded companies. Joe Founded Vivolearn in 2018 after inventing the technology behind it while playing guitar. He has been working full-time on this company since.

Ever dream of launching your product and then getting TV exposure on a major network morning show like Good Morning America. Watch this episode to learn Lerin’s story about how she did just that. Our guest this week is Lerin Lockwood, the inventor of the Lion Latch, the quick solution to safely storing your small jewelry while on-the-go! Holds necklaces, earrings and rings, and more! Lerin Lockwood is a high school art teacher & multi-sport coach.

How did Lerin Come Up with Her Idea? I use my hands A LOT throughout the day. Because I’m so active, I have several occasions each day where I have to take off my jewelry including my wedding rings. When I’m teaching art, working with clay or throwing on the pottery wheel, I don’t want my rings to dent or scrape my hard work, nor do I want to spend the next hour cleaning clay out of every crevice of my rings. When I’m in the weight room, on the field or on the courts, I have to take my rings off to avoid scratching them or bending them. I was once on the softball field & had to catch in for our outfielder’s last minute. After catching a ball from our center fielder, I felt a sting in my ring finger. I removed my hand from my glove & saw the ball had bent my engagement ring, causing it to flatten into my finger & even worse… it knocked out a stone and I couldn’t find it. I made the call to my husband & his response was, “I think I’m going to be sick.” I told him it was one of the small stones not the large ones, & he felt a little relief, but regardless we had to pay to replace the stone & repair the ring. We never wanted to have that feeling again, so I began to look for places to keep my ring when I couldn’t wear it. I tried my purse and wallet but felt that was unsafe because pockets could have holes in them or change & other loose items could scratch & damage my ring. Pre-practice, I’d forget to take my rings off beforehand in the locker room. Come mid-practice, I would need a place to put my rings because my fingers would swell & cause discomfort. That’s when I began placing my ring on my necklace, but it would bounce around while I was being active & I’d then end up taking off my necklace AND my engagement ring. I decided my keychain carabiner was a good last minute place to latch my rings on, but I was still leaving them exposed to objects that could damage my ring, such as my keys.

I needed a protective, convenient & consistent place to keep my rings from being damaged or lost, that could still give me peace of mind while I was hard at work or play. Also, I needed something that wouldn’t come unscrewed or unzipped like all of the other products made for storage. That’s when I decided to do something myself, so I developed the Lion Latch.

IUIA Education Series - In this episode, Johnny Georges will share how he launched a new product, achieved mass market success and the experience of striking a deal with John Paul Dejoria on Shark Tank season 5.

Hearing from someone who has done it successfully can be a powerful way for you to learn firsthand how successful inventors develop marketable products.

Johnny Georges grew up in Winter Haven, Florida where their single mother raised him and his brother. Johnny has been a hard worker ever since he was a kid; he got his first job in the 4th grade at a gas station on Avenue G in Inwood. After graduating from job school, Johnny went to work for his father for over 20 years; learning firsthand how to engineer and install irrigation, drill wells and install pumps and motors. Over that 20 year span, Johnny put in over 10,000 pumps and motors and installed over 30,000 acres of irrigation for citrus. The tree T-PEE was first made by Rick Georges and Georges Enterprise Inc. for frost protection for young trees. The idea came about while banking trees in preparation for a night where frost was predicted. Banking trees is a method where you pack dirt around the young trees in order to keep them warm and prevent damage from frost. The next day, the dirt would be removed so the sun could warm the tree. This process was repeated each night the temperature was predicted to be below freezing. While banking trees one day, Johnny commented that there has to be an easier way to protect the trees from frost. So, Rick developed a small cone and placed it around the tree…and it worked. However, the cone still had to be manually installed with every freeze warning, and then removed the following day, which was very time consuming and manpower intensive. The cone only solved half of the problem.

Johnny saw the water saving potential and decided to make the T-PEE we have today. While conserving water, Johnny saw it as a domino effect. Not only was the tree T-PEE conserving water, it was conserving the electricity, or fuel, it takes to pump the water. The fertilizer savings were just as dramatic with farmers using 75% less because they were only putting it where it was needed. Same with herbicide; when not fertilizing the weeds and grass, you won’t need the roundup to kill the non-existent weeds. However, changing generations of farming practices doesn’t happen overnight! Despite rejection by traditional farmers and their conventional methods, Johnny continued with unyielding tenacity to chip away at the old outdated conventional practices…one farmer at a time. Then, in November of 2013, Johnny got his big break! He appeared on ABC’s “Shark Tank” and landed a deal with entrepreneur and philanthropist John Paul Dejoria. Together, and more determined than ever, Johnny’s dream and his father’s dream of changing the world is becoming a reality…one farmer at a time!

Product Development: Meet Johnny George Shark Tank Star and The Tree T-Pee
UIA-TV Education Series -Conversation with Judy Edwards, Squatty Potty Founder and Co-Creator

Many inventors dream of getting a deal on Shark Tank. In this episode, you will learn from Judy Edwards how to launch a new product and achieve mass market success. She will share the story of how they struck a deal on Shark Tank, in Season 6, with Lori Greiner.

Meet our guest: Judy Edwards along with her son Bobby and husband Bill are the designers and creators of Squatty Potty® toilet stools and the owners of Squatty Potty, LLC Judy is also the mother of 7 children and 33 grandchildren, 7 of which are great grandchildren. Bill and Judy have been married for almost 52 years. She started Squatty Potty at the early age of 60.

We have always been a health conscious family, but after a lifetime of colon issues Judy was searching for an alternative solution to her problems instead of laxatives. Judy was seeking a natural and inexpensive solution that would help correct and heal the problems she was experiencing. That’s when we found a wonderful and simple solution…Squatting!”

The simple knowledge of getting our knees up while going to the bathroom made a remarkable difference. We searched and searched but we could not find a good solution for putting us into a squatting position while using our toilet. After trying different stools, books, buckets – not to mention stubbing our toes many times (especially in the middle of the night) we decided to take matters into our own hands. That’s when we came up with the Squatty Potty® toilet stool.

Squatty Potty® wraps perfectly around your existing toilet and easily stores out of the way when not in use. We designed and created, tried and tested and then did it again and again. We thought of everything to make your experience better and more enjoyable. It is the perfect height, shape and design to work with any toilet. It is comfortable, ergonomic, easy to use, attractive and affordable. https://www.squattypotty.com/
